I first heard Maximum Capacity doing a radio interview. He was interesting, entertaining, and I wanted to learn a little bit more about him. This giant of a man wasn’t kidding about being the world’s largest athlete. While currently based in the US, he has been from Switzerland to Japan and worked with some of the greatest indy talents out there. And here he is…The World’s Largest Athlete…
1. Can you tell us why you picked the ring name Maximum Capacity and can you give us your stats?
Response: I was actually given the name by Bobby Rogers. When he was running FOW in Florida, he had the name already chosen, waiting for someone to come along that fit it. That person happened to be me.
I am 6’ and weigh over 600 pounds. Right now I am not working for any company on a consistent basis. I take bookings whenever they come. Most are overseas.
Maximum Capacity
2. Where did you receive your wrestling training and how long have you been in the professional wrestling ring?
Response: Rusty Brooks trained me. Rusty is a former WWE guy, whom actually got to work Hulk Hogan for the title years back. Rusty trained Norman Smiley and Dave Heath(Gangrel) and had a hand in training MVP as well as Billy Fives and Bruno Sassi (TNA security guy for Angle). Billy Fives and Flex Magnum also helped to train me. I started training in 2000, so my 9 year anniversary is coming up in August.
3. Who do you consider your greatest influence in professional wrestling?
Response: This is easy. Chris “Bambi Killer” Raaber. He is the only person to truly believe in me 100%. He gave me my 1st overseas tour in 2003 when I worked him in Austria for the EWA Heavyweight title. He is also responsible for my tour in Japan with Zero1-MAX and my trip to Switzerland. Chris has helped me more than anyone by a long way and I also consider him a very close friend.
4. What do you consider to be your strengths in the ring?
Response: My charisma, my looks and my size. I am the most unique person in all of professional wrestling today, if ever. I am able to move around the ring with great ease even at 600 pounds. I have some of the best promo skills in the business and am probably the most marketable person in wrestling today.
5. What do you consider to be your weaknesses in the ring?
Response: I only have one. My stamina. Most of this is due to having asthma. I have a lot of trouble breathing when I work matches and this keeps me from ever being at 100%, but even at less than 100%, I’m still pretty good.
Maximum Capactity Delivers an Elbow
6. Can you tell us what you feel was your best match and why you believe it was your best work?
Response: I would have to say Austria 2003 vs Chris Raaber. This was my 1st overseas match and I was main event on a card that also had Chris Hero, Bryan Danielson, Doug Williams and Jonny Storm. I was nervous being in the company of such great talent and at that time I was still green. This also was a big match for Chris and EWA as it was the first time wrestling was in that area in years. We worked in front of 1400 screaming fans and we told a great story. Chris put all his trust in me and I think him and I had a great match.
7. Can you tell us what you feel was your worst match and why you feel this was not your best work?
Response: My 1st match back in 2000 vs Rusty Brooks. I was terrible. I was green, I was so lost. I didn’t do anything right that match and ended up getting a concussion for my troubles. I was just not ready to work a match.
8. Of all of the matches you have had, which of your opponents would you consider to be the toughest you ever faced? What advantages did he (or she) have during that match?
Response: Masato Tanaka. I worked him twice in Japan. He had home country advantage. He is such a big star over in Japan and is such a great talent. I was in awe of him the entire trip over there. In the ring I was star struck. I was so nervous. Besides all this, he really is a tough son of a gun. His roaring elbow is as stiff as they come. I’d like another match with him, I’m ready for him now.
9. Wrestling fans love creating fantasy matches. If it were possible for you to create your own fantasy match, which wrestler would you choose as your opponent? Why this particular opponent and what do you think the outcome of your fantasy match would be? Don’t hold back, add stipulations and make sure you give us the finishing move.
Response: This is a loaded question. I have someone I want to put, but I know I will work him down the road, so even though Steve Corino would be my answer, I’m going to name someone else, someone I probably have no chance to work. Steve I do and will, so he’s out for now. I’d have to choose Kurt Angle. He’s a legit hooker and someone I’d love to lock up with. I know he would bring out the best in me. I’d want to work baby to his heel. I think we could tell an incredible story. After several submission attempts by him, I finally am able to nail him with a belly to belly suplex from the middle rope for the finish.
10. And, finally, all professional wrestlers have goals they wish to achieve. What is your ultimate goal?”
Response: To work fulltime overseas. Whether it be Japan, England, Austria or wherever. I just want to get out of Florida and work where the boys and fans just get it.

He says he’s the longest running GM and he didn’t become that by giving in to any disgruntled superstar who barges into his office. He then tells Jericho to leave his office. Jericho says if he keeps it up, he’ll end up being fired. Jericho says when Long changes his mind about the championship match being tonight, he knows where to find him.
Back in the arena, Jim Ross and Todd Grisham are discussing the next match. A video package showing the history between Dolph Ziggler (MY favorite Superstar! I just don’t remember his name.) and The Great Khali is shown.

Justin Roberts introduces both individuals before the bell rings to start the match. The match ends in somewhat controversial manner. Well, controversial according to the Hardy fans. At one point, Hardy was pinning Punk but at the 3 count, Punk placed his leg under the rope. The referee called for the bell but saw the foot and called the decision off. Hardy complained to the referee. Punk tried to hit the GTS on Hardy but Hardy dropped out of the hold. Hardy hit Punk with an elbow and Punk dropped to his knees. Hello everybody and welcome to Lucha Lessons with Nick Romano. As you might have guessed my name is Nick Romano and I’m a professional wrestler. In fact I might even be called a Luchador. You see, I live and I wrestle for Revolution Xtreme Wrestling in Panama City, Panama. And no that’s not in Florida. It’s actually in Central America and the reason I scored this gig is to try to explain to all of you fine readers a little bit about wrestling down here in Central and South America.
Panama until the late 90’s was a US military occupied country and one of the perks of that was our own little window into American pop culture: The Mitical channel 8! Oh yes my beloved channel 8 with Letterman, Saturday Night Live and free wrestling. I grew up as I’m sure some of you did watching WCW and the then WWF in channel 8, and even as a little child I began to get all wrapped up in the magical and bone crushing world of professional wrestling. Since I was 8 years old and I saw Macho Man Randy Savage soaring through the sky delivering his patented elbow drop into the chest of that villainous Jake Roberts, I knew I wanted to be a wrestler.
So after a few years ignoring those “Don’t try this at home” ads and beating up my classmates in school, I was finally 18 and ready to start my wrestling career, I was finally becoming a wrestler. Little did I know that I was actually on my way to become a luchador. Panama since the late 50`s was always a Lucha Libre territory. From Gory Guerrero, to the original El Santo, we have had legends from lucha libre grace our rings. So since that time, Panama, a country with no wrestling tradition of its own, took the lucha libre mantle and became a breeding ground for some of the best luchadores Central and South America have ever seen. El Idolo, Sandokan, Chamaco Castro and Sergio Galvez, our country’s lucha history runs deep and in the 80´s lucha libre rivaled our other national past time: Boxing ( Duran baby!! ) as the two most popular sports. And yeah I said Sport. In Panama wrestling is still pretty much real. There’s no such thing as kayfabe. People believe to this day that what they see on the ring is actually real life, which is a testament to the luchadores and the trail they blazed.
But I digress, where was I? Oh yeah lucha libre. Lucha libre style is a mixture of athleticism and the fantastic. Luchadores more than wrestlers are Super Heroes to the public in Latin America and it all begins and ends with their mythical mask. As I told you before, I was a fan of American style of wrestling and I never really got into the Lucha Libre scene around my country. Big hair, big muscles, chair shots and heel turns were my cup of tee, but very early in my wrestling training I realized the respect and adoration mask wrestlers get. This became evident whenever they did a show and Mexican Mask wrestlers came on to wrestle. Lucha libre is really hard to follow especially to someone who’s only seen American or European wrestling. The matches are fast paced and spot driven combining a lightning quick pace with a ballet-like refinement, Lucha libre is one of the most breathtaking, exciting and captivating wrestling styles to watch and their usually 3 falls to a finish. The winner of two falls gets the victory. In the shows we use top put on we really had no stories or rivalries. We had a masked tecnico (face) face off against a masked rudo (heel) as the all time favorite and usually the main event of the evening: Three masked tecnicos facing off against three masked rudos in a 2 out of 3 falls match for world domination.
To be honest, my soon to be loyal readers, I was not too thrilled in the beginning with this style. The confusing rules, dizzying array of highspots, lack of ‘proper’ psychology and choreographed sequences- This is not wrestling, It’s gymnastics- I said to myself over and over while I had to redo spots I knew in my heart I wasn’t going to use in one of my future matches. The styles are so different, For instance in the US the psychology is rest spot, get out of it, he brings you back down, you start pumping the crowd until you get that hot tag. Over here you have the heels beating up on you until somebody misses something and then the babyfaces make a comeback. And lucha libre highspots are much more elaborate and longer and it took me years to really get the hang of the elaborate sequence of moves it took to finish up a match on the lucha style. But as I soon learned Just because you don’t understand something doesn’t means it isn’t legitimate…
TO BE CONTINUED…
